Is tumbbad movie flop? Tumbbad (2018) review

Yes, Tumbadd flopped at the box office, and although though it has gained cult status since its premiere, it did not bring in a lot of money when it first opened. We shouldn’t say that it’s a complete flop movie but at the time of Tumbbad release film didn’t get the appreciation or views as it deserves.

Why we say flop? Identical to the reason why Andaz Apna Apna, Swadesh, Tamasha, and even a Hollywood production like Fight Club were box office duds. People want to be entertained right away when they visit a theatre. They don’t want to give the story their full attention or think critically. This explains why some of the greatest films yet receive little attention. Fortunately, Tumbadd gained some notoriety a few years after its premiere, and now everyone agrees that it is one of the greatest films of this generation.

As Vinayak in Tumbbad, Sohum Shah tells the tale of the Goddess of Prosperity and represents an endless supply of food and money. The goddess loved Hastar, her firstborn, who wanted to take all the food and money for himself.

Story

So let’s travel back in time to the Goddess of Prosperity’s mythical era. The earth is her womb, and she represents limitless a wealth and food in the form of grain and gold. She had 190 million gods at the time the universe was born. Her first and dearest son, Hastar, was a greedy for food and riches. While Hastar was ready to buy food from the goddess, the other gods attacked him and took the gold from him. The goddess then saved him, but only on the condition that he would never be worshipped and that history would forget him. Hastar remained in his mother’s womb for several years.

However ages later, the residents of Tumbbad village, where Hastar has been trapped in his mother’s womb, avoid this ancient beliefs and build a temple dedicated to Hastar. This earns the shrap (curse) of the gods and they curse the village, causing an incessant downpour of rain over it. The rain never stops at tumbbad village.

The tale centres on an Indian mythological figure of a gold-laden but starving demon. By constructing a temple inside a remote mansion, one family was able to bring the demon back to life. As a result, the family is shunned, but only one elderly man continues to live by himself with the demon’s idol. Daily visits to the mansion are made by the old man’s mistress. The family’s home is next to the mansion, which is also home to the mistress, her two children, and the great-great grandmother of the elderly man who was cursed to live forever after being bitten by a demon.Great great grandmother of the old man who is being cursed to live forever after the bite of the demon and the old hag needs to be fed regularly while she is asleep or she might resort to cannibalism.

Positive points

The horrific, raw reds that characterise Vinayak’s secret and price are among Tumbbad’s most striking colours. Even seasoned horror aficionados will find some of the images to be incredibly vivid, creating lasting scenes. The goal of all horror is to frighten viewers out of their comfort zones and make them feel threatened by the strange and unfamiliar. With its dependence on the tone of Indian mythology and the contours of Indian history, Tumbbad simply carries them farther than most horror tales. In the process, it takes us to stranger, sinister, and joyous realms.

That’s one of the great joys of Tumbbad, Rahi Anil Barve’s stunning 2018 Hindi-language horror story about gods, greed, and gore. The raw bones of this movie are familiar enough: man gives into his vices, man faces a supernatural accounting. But the specific shape that story takes, and the imagery used to lay it out, will be unfamiliar to Western audiences. And the graphic, chilling details hit particularly hard because they’re so unexpected. It’s a superb Halloween-season discovery.

Negative points

A feature of mystery is that it’s only appealing while it’s unknown! Due to excessive focus on the beast throughout the first half, viewers’ interest starts to fade. There is only one title song, which was written by Ajay-Atul and is performed by Atul Gogavale. Every single time it is played during key moments in the movie, it is impactful.

Review

Both Sohum Shah and Anita Date have well performed their roles. The direction was unconventional and unique. This is the first film of its kind, and Hollywood can undoubtedly benefit from it. This is a vast improvement over Hollywood productions like Conjuring and Annabelle. A must-have form of entertainment. Watch it, especially if you don’t enjoy seeing the typical dramas offered by Indian movies, like Race 3.

This was something that might give Hollywood film producers “goosebumps.” This film will greatly enhance Indian cinema, but sadly, Indian cinema is not ready for it. Unprepared viewers cannot handle it. We continue to enjoy listening to and seeing the standard dramatisation. I had fantasies about how the drama and performance for the movie Street were created. But now that I’ve seen it, I can proudly recognise the depth and philosophy of this film. This demonstrates the potential of a thriller. The plot, which was incredibly symbolic of human desire, was the movie’s main draw. The message of the film is that human need leads to darkness.

The movie captivates you from the very first frame thanks to its powerful and alluring visuals. The entire film was shot in natural light, which gives the pictures a lot of authenticity. One of the most eerie, masterful camera works I’ve ever seen in a movie, I think.

Every image and scenario appears to be a piece of art. The VFX used to build Hastar inside the Goddess’s tummy is spectacular as well. Stunning job in every way.Even after the movie is ended, the screenplay will linger with you because it is so sharp, precise, and unsettling. The three chapters of the script are separated into groups based on the family’s generational makeup. Ajay-Atul and Jesper Kyd’s music complements the film so beautifully.

The performance of Sohum Shah as Vinayak is superb. The supporting cast performs admirably. Greed, one of the seven deadly sins, is beautifully depicted, along with how it contributes to human fallibility. It makes sense why it took years to create, make, and have the film changed and reshot. The outcomes are astounding. Anand Gandhi and Rahi Anil Barve bow. You’ve produced something truly remarkable.

Tumbbad is undoubtedly one of the greatest movies ever created and, in my opinion, the best movie of the year. With spectacular images, incredible narrative, and excellent sound, it redefines the horror genre. You gotta watch it.
